Opals Prevail in Battle with Canada

It was a pendulum swing of momentum throughout an action packed game where the Opals improved to three wins and one loss in Group B with an inspired 75-72 victory over Canada.

The night after picking up a huge win over Serbia, Australia managed to make it three in a row with a tight three point victory over a previously undefeated Canada team.

The opals were spurred on by a near triple-double effort from Steph Talbot who managed 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in an amazing all-around game from the experienced Aussie. Talbot played all but 4 minutes of the thrilling game.

The first half was significantly back and forth, including an incredible 19-0 run that gave the Aussies a 37-33 lead going into halftime. The team rallied at several moments during the game, showing remarkable resilience being without star Rebecca Allen for this huge game.

The Opals were also helped by what some are already calling a breakout game for Ezi Magbegor. Magbegor scored a team-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and an astonishing five blocks.

Finally, the leadership and determination exhibited by experienced guard Sami Whitcomb had a significant impact as she was able to score at some pivotal moments in the game. Whitcomb finished with 15 points and six assists in almost 34 minutes of game time.
