Aussies Abroad: Yeatman's first win, and Hendriks returns

Curtis Mead was confirmed as a future star of the game while Riley Yeatman earned his first professional win, Kai Wynyard was promoted to Single A, and Liam Hendriks returned to the Chicago White Sox lineup.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

ROOKIE LEAGUES - ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE

RILEY YEATMAN – ACL PADRES

South Australian Riley Yeatman appeared in one game during the week for the ACL Padres, the rookie affiliate of the San Diego Padres, pitching 3.0 innings and earning the first professional win of his career in the process.

On July 8, in an 11-4 victory against the ACL White Sox at Peoria Stadium, Yeatman earned the win as he came into the game as relief in the sixth inning, replacing Javier Chacon. Yeatman threw four pitches throughout the top of the sixth to record three outs (and give up a double) before a three-up, three-down seventh inning, and, after a lead-off double in the eighth inning, he recorded the three outs in succession to end the defensive half of the inning. He was replaced by Reinier Parra for the ninth inning.

CALLUM WALLACE – ACL DODGERS

Queenslander Callum Wallace appeared in one game for the ACL Dodgers, the rookie affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, recording a hold through 1.1 innings in relief,

On July 7, in a 12-inning 13-12 loss to the FCL Rangers at Surprise Stadium, Wallace replaced Jorge Gonzalez during the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs. The outing didn’t start well as he surrendered a run via a wild pitch, before seeing the batter strike out for the final out.

The bottom of the seventh inning included a hit by pitch and a walk, however, Wallace was able to secure all three outs via a strikeout. He was replaced by Horacio Andujar ahead of the bottom of the eighth inning.

BEN WALMSLEY – ACL REDS

Queenslander Ben Walmsley appeared in one game for the week for the ACL Reds, the rookie affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, getting the starting duties and lasting three innings on the mound.

Walmsley earned the start in the middle for the July 7 matchup against the ACL Brewers Blue at American Family Fields of Phoenix, helping the ACL Reds on the way to a 7-2 victory.

The bottom of the first began with a groundout before a hit by pitch and a single, however, Walmsley was able to get the final two outs via called strikeouts to end the inning. The second and third defensive innings’ were each three-up, three-down offerings, with Nestor Lorant replacing Walmsley for the fourth inning.

LIAM SPENCE – ACL CUBS

Victorian Liam Spence appeared in three games during the week for the ACL Cubs, the rookie affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

On July 4, in a 8-2 loss to the ACL White Sox at Sloan Park, Spence went one for four with an RBI, hitting a single into centrefield which scored Christian Olivo, with Spence remaining at first base as the final two outs were made.

Spence went two for four in a 7-3 loss to the ACL Guardians at Goodyear Ballpark on July 7, hitting a lead-off double into left field in the fifth inning, being picked off at second base, and hitting a lead-off single in the seventh inning, but was forced out at second.

On July 9, in a 4-3 loss to the ACL Athletics at Sloan Park, Spence went zero for three.

ROOKIE LEAGUES – FLORIDA COMPLEX LEAGUE

SOLOMON MAGUIRE – FCL PIRATES

New South Welshman Solomon Maguire appeared in four games this week for the FCL Pirates, the rookie affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

His first game of the week was on July 4, a 19-6 defeat to the FCL Rays at Pirate City Complex, where Maguire finished one for three with two runs and a base on balls. He earned a walk in the third inning, rounding to third base on a Javier Rivas double, and scoring on a Geovanny Planchart groundout. He hit a seventh-inning double into centrefield before advancing on walks, all the way to scoring at home.

Maguire entered the July 5 game against the FCL Rays at Charlotte Sports Park, replacing Braylon Bishop in the bottom of the eighth inning of the 7-6 loss.

Maguire was back in the stating lineup for an 11-10 loss on July 7 where he went two for four with three runs, an RBI, and a base on balls. He hit a single into right field in the first inning, and scored on a Shalin Polanco double.

Maguire was walked in the fifth inning and advanced via a single, then a wild pitch, before scoring on an Omar Alfonzo single. He hit a two-out single in the eighth inning, which scored Rafael Escalante, with Maguire scoring via a Polanco three-run home run.

On July 8, in a 7-5 win against the FCL Orioles at Pirate City Complex, Maguire went two for four with two runs, two RBIs, and a base on balls. He hit a single into right field in the first inning, and scored on a Esmerlyn Valdez single a few batters later.

In the second inning, he hit a single into right field that scored two runs, and despite getting to third base throughout the innings, wasn’t able to score a run. Maguire got a base on balls in the sixth inning and made his way to third base after a passed ball and a single, before scoring on a wild pitch.

CLAYTON CAMPBELL – FCL TIGERS

New South Welshman Clayton Campbell appeared in five games for the FCL Tigers, the rookie affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, during the past week.

In his first game of the week, on July 4, in an 11-inning 11-6 win over the FCL Blue Jays at Bobby Mattick Complex, Campbell went zero for three with a run and a base on balls. He earned the two-out walk at the top of the 11th inning before a wild pitch saw him reach second base ahead of scoring courtesy of a Jose Rivera double into left field.

Campbell went zero for two with two walks in the return game at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium on July 4, which resulted in a 9-1 loss. He drew a lead-off walk in the fourth inning but was forced out at second base, and found a free pass to first base again in the sixth inning, making it as far as second base before the inning ended.

On July 7, in a 4-3 loss to the FCL Phillies at Carpenter Complex, Campbell went one for two with a run and a base on balls. He earned a lead-off walk at the top of the second inning, though the next three batters got out in succession, before hitting a lead-off single into left field to begin the fourth inning, rounding the bases with successive groundouts, and scoring on a wild pitch.

Campbell went one for two with a run, an RBI and a base on balls in an 8-1 loss to FCL Phillies on July 8 at Tigertown. He earned a walk in the fourth inning, ending up at second base, and to begin the bottom of the seventh inning; he hit a lead-off solo home run over the fence in left field in what would be the FCL Tigers’ only run of the ballgame.

Campbell went zero for three with an eighth-inning base on balls in a 7-1 defeat against the FCL Yankees at Tigertown in his final game of the week on July 9.

NIKAU POUAKA-GREGO – FCL PHILLIES

Victorian Nikau Pouaka-Grego appeared in one game this week for the FCL Phillies, the rookie affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

On July 9, in a 9-6 defeat against the FCL Blue Jays at Bobby Mattick Complex, he went zero for two before being substituted out of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning for pinch-hitter Lou Helmig, who stayed in the game.

SINGLE A

KAI WYNYARD – DOWN EAST WOOD DUCKS

Queenslander Kai Wynyard was promoted from the FCL Rangers to the Texas Rangers’ Single A affiliate, the Down East Wood Ducks at the beginning of the week and appeared in two games for the team during an away series to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers at SEGRA Stadium.

His first Single A debut on July 4 which resulted in a 9-3 victory, Wynyard was awarded a hold as he pitched 2.1 innings in relief, replacing starter Gavin Collyer in the bottom of the sixth. With one out to get in the inning he entered, he got the batter to fly out and end the inning.

The seventh inning started with a groundout before a hit-by pitch saw a runner on base, however, Wynyard was able to get the next two batters to strike out swinging to end the inning, and it was a three-up, three-down eighth inning, with all three batters going down via a strikeout. He was replaced by Jackson Leath for the ninth inning.

Wynyard returned to the mound on July 10, a 2-0 win to the Wood Ducks, earning his second hold in as many nights as he replaced starting pitcher Winston Santos at the bottom of the seventh inning. It was a three-up, three-down affair in the seventh inning, before the eighth inning yielded two outs and two singles before Wynyard’s night was done, replaced by Leath.

BLAKE TOWNSEND – MODESTO NUTS

Victorian Blake Townsend appeared in one game for the Modesto Nuts, the Seattle Mariners’ Single A affiliate, in a home series at John Thurman Field against the Stockton Ports, pitching 2.1 innings in relief.

On July 7, in a 5-3 loss, Townsend came into the game during the top of the fourth inning to replace starting pitcher Sam Carlson, and, with two outs, Townsend got the final out of the inning, a swinging strikeout. A hit by pitch to begin the fifth inning didn’t deter Townsend from the sitting the next three batters down in succession, and it was a three-up, three-down showing at the top of the sixth inning before he was replaced by Juan Burgos ahead of the seventh inning.

CHRIS BURKE – CLEARWATER THRESHERS

Victorian Chris Burke appeared in one game for the Clearwater Threshers, the Single A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, during an away series to the Dunedin Blue Jays at TD Ballpark.

On July 10, in a 5-3 win, Burke went zero for two at the plate with a run and two walks. Burke earned a walk at the top of the second innings and made his way to second base on a Albert Jerez single, before crossing home plate and scoring via a Nick Maton single. He was walked again in the sixth inning but was picked off at first base by the Blue Jays’ pitcher.

JAKE BURNS – PALM BEACH CARDINALS

New South Welshman Jake Burns appeared in two games for the Palm Beach Cardinals, the St Louis Cardinals’ Single A affiliate, in an away series to the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

On July 7, in a 4-3 loss, Burns went zero for three before being substituted out for pinch-hitter Elijah Cabell at the top of the ninth inning. The following day, on July 8, in a 5-4 extra-innings loss, Burns was not part of he starting lineup but came into the game at the bottom of the 10th inning, replacing Matt Chamberlain, and playing catcher.

JOSH GESSNER – DOWN EAST WOOD DUCKS

New South Welshman Josh Gessner appeared in one game this week for the Down East Wood Ducks, the Single A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, pitching four innings for two hits and one run with three walks and three strikeouts.

In a 7-4 loss on July 7, against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers at SEGRA Stadium, Gesser came into the game as relief for starting pitcher Ryan Garcia for the bottom of the third inning. Gessner gave up a lead-off walk before getting his first strikeout of the night, before a single and a sacrifice fly scored a run for the opponents before the inning was over.

It was a three-up, three-down situation in the fourth inning and although he gave up a two-out base on balls in the fifth inning, Gessner was able to get out of the situation without any damage. He gave up a lead-off double in the sixth inning and another base on balls, but his field did the job behind him to get out of the inning as he was replaced by Juan Mejia for the seventh inning.

HIGH A

JARRYD DALE – FORT WAYNE TINCAPS

Victorian Jarryd Dale appeared in all six games for the week for the Fort Wayne TinCaps, the High A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, in a home series against the Lake County Captains at Parkview Field.

On July 4, in a 6-0 loss, Dale went zero for three, however, on July 7, in an 11-10 13-inning defeat, he went zero for three at the plate, but scored a run, had an RBI, and two walks. Dale was walked in the sixth inning, making it to third base before the inning was over, and the eighth inning, making his way around the bases via a walk and a single, before scoring on an Adam Kerner single. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Dale hit a sacrifice fly into right field that helped Cole Cummings score and even the scores at 10-all.

On July 8, in a 5-4 win, Dale went two for three with a run and a base on balls. He hit a lead-off single into right field to begin the second inning, and stole second base and advanced to third base on the errored throw by the catcher, though the next three batters each went down as Dale was left stranded.

Dale hit another lead-off single into right field in the fourth inning, stealing second base, advancing to third base on a sacrifice bunt, and scoring on contact by Max Ferguson. Dale was walked in the seventh inning and made his way to third base on a Olivier Basabe single, but was still there as the inning came to a close.

Dale went one for two with an RBI and a base on balls in an extra-innings 3-2 win in the first game of a July 9 doubleheader. He was walked to lead-off the bottom of the third inning, and was at second base as the inning was over, and hit a two-out single into right field in the seventh inning that scored Lucas Dunn and got the TinCaps on the board, with Dale at second base as the inning ended.

In the second game of the July 9 doubleheader, Dale went zero for two with a run and a base on balls in the 6-2 victory, earning a second-inning walk where he scored on a Matthew Acosta double.

Dale ended the series on July 10 with a zero for three showing, though had an RBI and a base on balls as he drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning while the bases were loaded, resulting in Dunn scoring, and Dale finishing at first base as the inning came to a close.

JACK O’LOUGHLIN – WEST MICHIGAN WHITECAPS

South Australian Jack O’Loughlin appeared in one game for the West Michigan Whitecaps, the High A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, in a away series to the Dayton Dragons at Day Air Ballpark, pitching 1.0 innings as he recorded a hold.

On July 10, in a 4-1 victory, O’Loughlin entered the game at the bottom of the seventh inning and although he gave up a single and a base on balls to begin the dig, a double play and a swinging strikeout ensured he, and the team got out of the inning unscathed. He was replaced by Dario Gardea for the eighth inning.

ALEX HALL – WISCONSIN TIMBER RATTLERS

West Australian Alex Hall appeared in four games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the High A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in an away series to the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field.

On July 4, in a 9-1 win, Hall went zero for three with a run and two walks. He earned a walk in the sixth inning, making his way to third base on an Ethan Murray double, and then scoring on an Arbert Cipion single. He earned a two-out walk in the ninth inning though went no further than first base.

Hall was not part of the starting lineup for the July 7 matchup, however, entered the game in the bottom of the ninth for injured catcher Darrien Miller. Hall had one at-bat though struck out as the side lost 8-6.

Hall went two for five with a run and two RBIs in an 11-3 win on July 8. He hit a double into centrefield at the top of the seventh inning that scored Murray and Zavier Wilson, and made his way to third before the inning ended. He hit a single into centrefield at the top of the ninth inning, advancing to third base on back-to-back walks, before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Murray.

On July 10, in a 6-2 loss, Hall went zero for three.

RIXON WINGROVE – JERSEY SHORE BLUECLAWS

New South Welshman Rixon Wingrove appeared in five games for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the High A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, in a home series at ShoreTown Ballpark against the Hudson Valley Renegades.

On July 4, in an 8-0 loss, Wingrove went zero for three with sixth-inning base on balls where he ended up at second base before the end of the inning. He went zero for four in a 9-3 loss on July 6.

On July 7, Wingrove went zero for three with a fourth-inning base on balls in a 7-1 defeat. He went zero for four in a 6-2 loss on July 9.

Wingrove put the earlier games of the week behind him on July 10 however, going two for five with two RBIs in a 9-6 loss. He hit a two-out double into left field in the first inning that scored Carlos De La Cruz as he tried for home on a Jared Carr single, though was tagged out at the plate. It wasn’t until the bottom of the 11th inning when Wingrove got his second hit of the night, a single into right field that scored the tiebreaker runner De La Cruz from second base.

ULRICH BOJARSKI – WEST MICHIGAN WHITECAPS

West Australian Ulrich Bojarski appeared in two games during the week for the West Michigan Whitecaps, the High A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, in an away series to the Dayton Dragons at Day Air Ballpark.

On July 7, in a 5-0 loss, Bojarski went zero for three, and on July 9, in a 3-0 win, he went zero for two before being substituted out for a pinch-hitter at the top of the sixth inning who stayed in the game.

DOUBLE A

ROBBIE GLENDINNING – NORTHWEST ARKANSAS NATURALS

West Australian Robbie Glendinning appeared in five games for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the Double A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, in a home series at Arvest Ballpark against the Tulsa Drillers.

In the first game of the series on July 4, Glendinning went two for four with a run, an RBI, and a base on balls in the 7-6 extra-innings victory. He hit a double into left field in the third inning and scored on a single from John Rave, before, in the seventh inning, hitting a single into centrefield that scored Nick Loftin ahead of being forced out at second base.

Glendinning went two for four with two runs and a base on balls in a 12-4 win on July 6. He earned a walk in the first inning, advancing to second and third on wild pitches, before a sacrifice fly from Seuly Matias allowed him to score. Glendinning hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on a Rave two-run home run. He also singled into left field in the eighth inning, advancing to second and third base via his teammates earning walks, though ending up there as the inning ended.

Glendinning went zero for four in a 3-2 loss on July 8, before going one for five with a run and an RBI on July 9, hitting a lead-off solo home run in the seventh inning that put the Naturals ahead by one run in an eventual 6-3 victory.

Glendinning went zero for four in a 6-3 loss on July 10 to end the week.

TRIPLE A

CURTIS MEAD – DURHAM BULLS

South Australian Curtis Mead appeared in all six games for the Durham Bulls, the Triple A affiliate of the Tampa Bays Rays, in a home series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park against the Memphis Redbirds.

In the first game of the series on July 4, in a 6-4 loss, Mead went zero for five, however, on July 6, in a 10-5 win, he went one for three with a run, an RBI, and two walks.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mead hit a single into centrefield that scored Jonathan Aranda, heading to third base on a Luke Raley single, before scoring on a Jim Haley sacrifice fly. He earned a walk in the fourth and sixth innings, though was standing at second base each time the inning ended.

Mead went two for five with two runs and three RBIs in an 8-7 extra-innings victory on July 7. At the bottom of the fourth inning, Mead got the scoring started with a two-run home run over the centrefield fence as he scored Aranda also, before leading off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double into centrefield that scored tiebreaker runner Aranda to even the scores at seven-all.

On July 8, in a 13-0 win, Mead went one for five with a run, hitting a single into right field in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring on a Tristan Gray double.

Mead went zero for two with a base on balls in a 9-2 loss on July 9. He was first hit by a pitch in the first inning, before he also earned a walk in the eighth inning, neither time advancing past second base. Mead ended the week with a pinch-hit appearance on July 10 where he earned a ninth-inning walk in a 5-1 loss.

During the week, Mead was one of the initial selections to the American League roster for the MLB's All-Star Futures Game, to take place this weekend as part of the league's All-Star Weekend festivities.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

LIAM HENDRIKS – CHICAGO WHITE SOX

West Australian Liam Hendriks returned from injury and appeared in three games for the Chicago White Sox during the week, earning a save in one of his showings.

On July 4, Hendriks was entered into the game against the Minnesota Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field at the top of the eighth inning, replacing Matt Foster. Hendriks needed 14 pitches to see each of the three batters he faced strikeout, as he was replaced by Kendall Graveman at the top of the ninth inning of the 6-3 loss.

On July 6, in a 9-8 extra-innings win, Hendriks entered the game at the top of the ninth inning, replacing Foster, using 13 pitches to claim the three outs that included two strikeouts as he was replaced by Jose Ruiz as the game went to extra innings.

On July 10, in a 4-2 win against the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field, Hendriks replaced Graveman on the mound to pitch at the top of the ninth inning and needed nine pitches to claim he three outs as he wrapped up the game, and got his 17th save of the season in the process.
