Australia's women are on the edge of becoming undisputed champions

This week on the Top Edge Podcast Rory and Jess discussed the possibility of what happens to the Australian women if they win the T20 World Cup.

Australia's women got off to a great start to the T20 World Cup defeating the Kiwis by almost 100 runs thanks to an Alyssa Healy half-century and five wickets by Ash Gardner.

Last night we saw India just get over the line against Pakistan which Australia decimated last month at home. Right now it's hard to see any team coming close to Australia at this World Cup let alone getting a win.

Of course, anything can happen come finals time, but Australia certainly looks in the box seat right now. This side has dominated every competition they have come across in the last five years.

It's been a level of domination that hasn't been seen in Australian cricket since the Ponting men's side of the mid-2000s. Of course, though that side did lose the Ashes in 2005 whereas the current women don't seem to lose anything.

Over the last three years in T20 cricket, the Australians have lost just three matches from 34 attempts. A win-to-loss ratio of more than 830%.

They have also scored the fastest over that period at almost eight runs an over while their batters have averaged almost 35. These are numbers that are traditionally more suited to the men's game. Yet Australia's women with their professionalism have taken the T20 game to a new level. No other team in the world is consistently scoring the big totals that the Aussies are.

Over the same period, their ODI cricket has been even better. Just one loss has come in 24 games with the batters averaging 49. That of course includes the World Cup win at the start of last year.

The Australian women have now won seven of the 12 ODI World Cups as well as two of the last three and with another one just a couple of years away the Aussies quickly look the favourites.

In T20 cricket the World Cup numbers are even more insane. The Aussies have won five of the seven tournaments including the last two. The team is clearly extremely popular and if given the opportunity there is no doubt the Aussies would win even more Test cricket. And of course who could also forget a Commonwealth Games gold medal for their troubles in Birmingham?

No Australian sporting team has been as consistent for as long as this women's cricket side has. And adding another World Cup to that trophy cabinet would make it impossible to argue anything but.
