Kristy Wallace: Washington Mystics v Atlanta Dream, May 20, 2022

Keeping up with the Aussies in the WNBA: Week 2 Edition

Another great week of basketball from the Aussies In The WNBA, we take you through how the Aussies in the States have done this week.

Another week of WNBA action has come and gone, and it wasn't without an immense amount of excitement.

Atlanta Dream

Kristy Wallace: After having a pretty decent debut week 1 in the WNBA, Wallace upped her game during Week 2, maintaining her spot in the starting lineup. The Dream only played two games during week 2, going 1-1 with a win against the Indiana Fever on the 17th and a loss to the Washington Mystics on the 20th.

Wallace's best game of her career so far came in the win against the Fever. She played for 26 minutes and absolutely shined. She set a career-high in points and shooting efficiency with 15 points on 67% shooting from the field and 75% from three. Kristy grabbed three rebounds, dished out an assist, and one steal.

Against the Mystics, Wallace didn't have the best night in terms of shooting. She recorded six points on 43% shooting from the field. But she did have a significant impact in other areas of the court. She grabbed two rebounds and two steals but most impressively found her teammates and displayed playmaking skills with five assists.

Chicago Sky

Anneli Maley: Maley only appeared in one game during Week 2 in a 74-71 loss against the Seattle Storm. She hit the floor for nine minutes, only recording an assist.

Indiana Fever

Alanna Smith: Smith was more involved in Week 2 than in Week 1. The Fever faced off against the Dream on May 17 and the Connecticut Sun on both May 20 and May 22. All three of those games were losses for Indiana.

Against the Dream, she didn't have her best display in terms of shooting percentage. She recorded two points on 14% shooting. She did have a great impact on the boards where she grabbed five, three on offence and two on defence, a steal, and two blocks.

In the first game against the Sun, Smith shot 33% from the field but both of her makes from the field were from beyond the arc. She recorded nine points, two rebounds, and two steals.

Lastly, in the final game against Connecticut, Alanna recorded four points, one rebound, and one steal on 29% from the field in a season-high 21 minutes.

Los Angeles Sparks

Amy Atwell: The Hawai'i alum did not play at all during Week 2.

Liz Cambage: The Sparks may not have come out with a win in their two games this week, but Liz played pretty well against both the Minnesota Lynx on May 17 and the Seattle Storm on May 20.

Cambage posted a pretty solid stat line against the Lynx. She recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks on 63% shooting in 25 min. She upped her game even more against Seattle. She recorded 25 points, eight rebounds, and three assists on 53% shooting in 32 minutes.

Although she wasn't the defensive machine she is typically against the Storm, her play enabled the Sparks to get ever so close to upsetting the Storm in a heartbreaking 83-80 loss.

New York Liberty

Rebecca Allen: Welcome back, Spida! Bec made her season debut on May 17 in a loss against the Connecticut Sun. She played 23 minutes off the bench, recording four points, four rebounds, a steal, and a block. Although she didn't shoot well, only making one shot from the field on a 13% clip, she showed her defensive talent carried over from Valencia.

Sami Whitcomb: Whitcomb didn't have her best night against the Sun. She shot 50% from the field for six points. Her four attempts tie for a season-low. The Sun's defence did a great job at clamping down on Sami, but that didn't stop her from making a different impact. She recorded one rebound, three assists, and a steal in the 92-65 loss.

Seattle Storm

Ezi Magbegor: EZI EZI EZI! OI OI OI! Magbegor continues to improve before our eyes. This week, her great performances started a new two-game winning streak for Seattle, snapping their three-game losing streak.

On May 18, Ezi faced off against a stellar Sky defence where she was primarily defended by 2020 defensive player of the year and overall star Candace Parker. Even with the matchup against Candace, Ezi went off. She recorded a career-high 21 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. She spread the defence out by expanding her range to the midrange, which led to her success.

On May 20, Magbegor faced off against Liz Cambage and the Sparks. Having Liz as your assignment is not an easy task. Ezi didn't have the absolute best shooting night, only scoring nine points on 30% shooting. But she did rack up 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks, including these highlights that happened in the same 47 seconds.

Stephanie Talbot: Talbot didn't show up too much on the scoreboard, only amassing six and five points against the Sky and Sparks, respectively. Where she did show up most was on defence.

Against the Sky, she grabbed seven rebounds and dished out two assists and two steals. She didn't do as great defensively against the Sparks, only grabbing three rebounds. Talbot continues to be consistent for the Storm as a defender, which had an immensely positive impact in snapping their losing streak.

That's all for this week's edition of Aussies in the WNBA. Tune in next week for Week 3's update.
